Klaricid (Clarithromycin)is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria that cause a wide variety of infections.
Klaricid is usually is used for:
- Bacterial infections of the lungs (lower respiratory tract), eg bronchitis, pneumonia
- Bacterial infections of the upper respiratory tract, eg sinusitis, pharyngitis
- Bacterial infections of the skin or soft tissue
- Bacterial infection of the middle ear (otitis media)
- Eradicating Helicobacter pylori bacteria from the gut in people with duodenal ulcers.
Klaricid was developed in Japanese labs in the 1970s. It was a byproduct of a different version of erythromycin gone wrong. More than a decade later, an American company, Abbott Laboratories, produced a partnership with the original manufacturer of Klaricid, Taisho, to increase its international rights. In 2004, the medication became a generic brand in Europe and in the United States the following year.
Like any strong medication, Klaricid has its own set of side effect:
- diarrhea
- emesis
- swelling on the face
In a few cases, side effects could be worst and may include headache, motion sickness, skin rashes, dry mouth, mood condition attacks, hallucinations, yellowish skin, and kidney failure. If any of these crops up, rush to your doctor immediately. Any side effect that does not appear normal or is causing you discomfort should be a cause for alarm.
